A sprawling wasteland lies before you, wiped out
by the centuries-old atomic blasts of The Great War. Beyond a smattering
of hills, you can see the charred remains of a society you remember
shiny and new. Through the bare foundations creep a collection of
mutated critter’s whose origins you can only guess, attaching whoever
and whatever crosses their paths. Beneath the overgrown soil,
vault-dwelling communities fight to survive on limited resources. It is
across these abandoned spaces you must now travel, building a new life
atop the crushed glory of a destroyed world.
Fallout is an adventure board game based on the hit video
game series by Bethesda Softworks. In the game, one to four survivors
will begin at the edge of an undiscovered landscape with one primary
objective: to survive. Staying alive, however, is just the beginning.
Players must explore the hidden map, fight ferocious enemies and build
the skills of their survivor as they attempt to complete challenging
quests and balance the feuding factions within the game. To win the
game, players must collect influence, thereby securing their spot in a
society struggling to thrive in a world forever changed.

Based on the super popular computer game series, this is typically high-quality production from the reliable Fantasy Flight Games. I haven't played the computer game, but my friends told me this did a good job of adapting that world to a tabletop board game. There are mechanics that seemed pretty innovative to me, including a great leveling-up system that makes it harder to level up the higher you get (like a computer game) and a story-driven quest system that goes in different directions depending on the choices you make. Combat was fun too, with dice-rolling that centred on hitting enemies in the right places (head, body, limbs) rather than just hit or miss. The components are predictably amazing. My only significant 'negative' is that, straight out of the box, the game feels like it needs more enemies to make combat more varied. It feels a bit like it was designed with a 'must have' expansion firmly in mind.
